Rome Attractions

The number one attraction on most visitors' lists is the Vatican. The distinctive dome of St Peter’s is highly impressive, but nothing can prepare you for the absolutely breathtaking beauty of Michelangelo’s masterpiece the Last Judgement, in the world famous Sistine Chapel. Being a top attraction it’s as famous for its queues as it is its artwork, so get there early. The Vatican museums also happen to be the largest in the world offering lots more to keep you occupied.

Rome

Get a taste for ancient Rome with a visit to the Forum and Palantine Hill. From the crumbling ruins of the Forum you can clearly see the layout of this once great ancient city, that will leave you with an overwhelming feeling of history. As for the Colosseum, you’ll be able to picture Russell Crowe’s most famous role as the Gladiator without any difficulty at all! Dating back to 72AD the sheer size of the place is quite staggering, and with a guide to fill you in on its gory past your visit will be a truly memorable experience.

As Rome's most well preserved treasure the Pantheon is definitely worth seeing. The design of this structure is awesome and the 30-foot opening in the roof of the dome lets the natural light flood into the interior, giving it a very surreal beauty. What’s more there’s no admission fee.

Trevi FountainFor great atmosphere take a trip to the Spanish Steps around early evening when many people are drawn to the area to see the various street performers. A hike up the steep steps rewards you with some great views out over the Piazza di Spagna below. The Spanish Steps is also where you’ll find Keats’ House. This most romantic of poets died here aged just 25 and the house is now open as a museum in his honour.

Finally, tucked away in a little piazza, making it a big surprise considering its unlikely location, is the famous Trevi Fountain. Every visitor to Rome has to see the Trevi Fountain and throw a coin in, which if legend is to be believed will ensure that you return to Rome.
